I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Shouldn’t I be able to cope with life stressors by myself?
Everyone needs help now and then, and you are taking very good care of yourself by making the decision to seek some support. It takes a lot of strength and courage to identify that there is a problem and then to reach out for assistance. Life can be hard sometimes, but you can learn to manage stressors a bit better, to feel more confident in yourself, to heal from any shame you have been carrying with you, and to improve your overall quality of life.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
As a psychotherapist, I will help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, help you gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, therapy is completely private and confidential and gives you a safe space to share thoughts and feelings that you have always kept to yourself. The therapeutic relationship is powerful, healing, and meant to be one-sided, and unlike in friendships, the focus of our time together is always solely on YOU.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication can be effective and is sometimes needed in conjunction with therapy. While medication treats the overt symptoms you are experiencing, 0ur work together is designed to explore the root of the issue, dig deep into your behavior, and teach strategies that can help you accomplish your personal and/or relational goals and improve your overall quality life.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
Because we all have different issues and goals for therapy, the therapeutic approach utilized will be different depending on what your personal needs are. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs. That being said, our work together will be a partnership, and your role is to make therapy a priority and to show up willing to explore and stretch yourself.
How long will it take?
Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time therapy can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek therapy in the first place.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication is crucial to your success. After all, we only see each other for a session a week. It’s the work you do outside of our sessions that will really help you see your personal growth and development.
